Day 2 – Thursday, 2 June 2011

June 5, 2011

By the grace of God, none of our luggage (Hailey’s, Didi’s and mine) was lost and there were no problems checking in with Carpatair in Munich.  As a matter of fact, the 5 of us were the first in line and all had great seats.  All was well until German “TSA” discovered that Haley was attempting to smuggle in contraband -or rather, 14 ounces of water- in her bottle.  The choices: get out of line, exit security and go back through customs, or chug it. She opted for the latter.   (FYI:  Their equipment is sensitive to underwire.)  Unfortunately, we couldn’t get online during the 4 hour layover, but we did have the opportunity to window shop and grab a quick bite (Haley, Didi and I enjoyed apfel streudel).

The Carpatair pilot must’ve thought he was auditioning for a stunt flying role in a movie.  Enough said!  We arrived in Timişoara on time and there were only 4 people in front of us as we stood in line for customs, and all our luggage arrived in tact.  We were met my Brother Ionel and Manu Olariu a little after 3:00pm Thursday afternoon.

Manu brought us home to Lugoj where we, the Nicely family, made our first stop.  We found out that we were staying in an apartment at our host church, Grace Baptist Church (GBC), whereas Sandra and Hailey were to be house guests of the Olariu family.  Dean and Didi rested up for a bit while I unpacked and got us settled in (the evening security guard at GBC on this particular evening is the only one that even remotely speaks English – talk about language immersion).  We have a private bathroom, but no kitchen facilities or appliances (i.e. toaster, mini fridge, microwave or toaster oven….) other than a coffee maker.  We don’t have good WIFI reception at GBC and no one seems to know the security key anyway so I may not be able to post as frequently as I thought.

Manu picked us up at church shortly after 6:00pm and took us to his home for a lovely meal.  Much to our dismay, Didi awoke from her nap with excruciating pain and pressure in her ear.  We called it an early night and were back at our apartment before 9:00pm.  The sun sets near 10:00pm in Lugoj… that can be quite deceiving when you have the potential of suffering from a 7 hour jet lag.

Thank you for your prayers.  Last weekend I was suffering with what appeared to be allergy induced tonsillitis, fighting off a sinus infection and coping with laryngitis.  By God’s provision and mercy I was able to go to the doctor on Monday and was placed on antibiotics and Prednisone.  This usually happens at some point during my mission trips to Romania or shortly after I return… not before.  Didi’s ear still hurts and Dean has mentioned that he has a sore throat.  Did I mention that Hailey is in an air cast?  She broke her foot last week.  “We battle not against flesh and blood…”  Please continue to pray for our health and strength to be restored.
